Founded in 1975 and located in Chicago's West Loop, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School (WY) has a tradition of academic excellence and ethnic and cultural diversity. Whitney Young High School received the National Blue Ribbon Award in 2020 and is ranked the 4th best high school in Illinois (U.S. News & World Report, April 2021), and the 2nd most diverse high school in Illinois (Niche, June 2021). Whitney M. Young Magnet High School offers a very rigorous college preparatory curriculum with two programs: Magnet High School program grades 9–12, and Academic Center grades 7 & 8. Demographically, the school is a microcosm of the entire city, as its enrollment is drawn from the city at large.
