Building on Excellence

The Campaign for Whitney Young

Fueled by a legacy of academic excellence, our students go all out every day to develop into the very best scholars, musicians, actors, athletes, doctors, lawyers, dancers, scientists, artists, problem solvers - you name it. It's a place where students can be themselves and become who they want to be.

More than 80,000 students from across the city of Chicago have walked the halls of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in the 40+years since it opened as the city's very first school of its kind.

After decades of wear and tear, our building is showing its age. It's time to go all in to make much-needed capital improvements.

Please support the Campaign for Whitney Young. With your help we will continue to be an anchor in the community - where students go all out.

About Us

Founded in 1975 and located in Chicago's West Loop, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School (WY) has a tradition of academic excellence and ethnic and cultural diversity.

Ranked the 4th best high school in Illinois (U.S. News & World Report, May 2019), 3rd best high school in Chicago (Chicago Magazine, May 2018) and most diverse high school in Illinois (Niche, June 2018). Whitney M. Young Magnet High School offers a very rigorous college preparatory curriculum with two programs: Magnet High School program grades 9–12, and Academic Center grades 7 & 8. Demographically, the school is a microcosm of the entire city, as its enrollment is drawn from the city at large.
